FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Attention Windows XP Users The printer driver that comes preinstalled with Windows XP is often a "mini-driver" without the functionality of the full driver version, especially with HP printers. If you cannot find the banner or custom size option recommended for your printer, your first step should be to go to your printer manufacturer's website and download the latest driver for your printer (this is a free download).

  14. Is there a manual or guide to MyCustomSigns software?
1. What kind of printer do I need?
We recommend inexpensive inkjet printers. HP, Canon, Epson, Lexmark, Brother, Dell and others make inkjet printers that support "banner" or "custom size" modes. Color laser printers may work but can be designed with limited paper size options. Xerox Phaser printers will not work as the wax ink will melt during the laminating process.

2. How do I find out if my printer will print a MyCustomSigns banner?
Look to your printer manufacturer's website, consult your manual, look in your printer's "Help" file. If you're still not sure, email Support@MyCustomSigns.net .

3. What Operating System is compatible with MyCustomSigns software?
Any Windows Operating System. If you use Windows XP see the note at the top of the page. Sorry, at this time, Apple OS and Linux are not supported without Windows emulators.

4. When installing MyCustomSigns software with Windows XP Pro I get several "file not found" messages. What do I do?
Each time a file not found message occurs, select OK. This will not affect the functionality of your software.

5. How do I make my printer print to the edges of the banner?
Each printer has different characteristics for printable areas. Look to your printer manufacturer's website, consult your manual, look in your printer's "Help" file. We suggest you print either 9 inch or 6 inch alignment template as your first banner to ascertain your printer's boundaries.

6. How do I make a transparent text box? Mine come out with a gray background.
Use the arrow tool (graphics mode) to select your text box. Right click with your mouse. To remove a fill color, Select Fill Color -> None. To change a fill color select Fill color -> and select a color or another option.

7. How do I remove a border from around a text box?

12. Can I use a 9 inch template to make a 6 inch banner?
Yes, but you may need to resize the text and images and you will need to select Page -> Margins to set the top margin (unprintable area) to 3.5 inches.

13. When I tried to install your software, nothing happened. Now what?
Make sure you correctly inserted the CD into the proper drive. If nothing happens go to your Windows Start Menu and select Run and enter D:\cdauto.exe where "D" is the name of your CD drive.

14. Is there a manual or guide to MyCustomSigns software?

Sign Making / Installation

  1. What is the difference between hot and cold laminates?
  2. How do I mount or hang the signs?
  3. How do I attach my sign to the top of a metal frame?
  4. How many hole reinforcers do I need per sign?
  5. What happens if I pierce the printed sign?
  6. Can I reuse the corrugated plastic backing boards?
  7. Do I need a "carrier" for the laminate pouches?
  8. Will my sign fade?
  9. How will my sign hold up in windy conditions?
  10. Can I print the the supplied cardstock on both sides?
  11. What do I do when I run out of supplies?

1. What is the difference between hot and cold laminates?
Hot laminates utilize plastic pouches that seal a printed piece with an overlap area. The combination of the overlap area and the heat sensitive glue that is released through the heat process completely seals the printed piece to create an extremely durable and waterproof product. Cold laminates are basically large adhesive tapes that cannot be relied upon in outdoor uses without an inevitable risk of moisture intrusion.

2. How do I mount or hang the signs?
The signs can be attached to the bottom of a yardarm style sign by using the hole reinforcers as a guide, piercing that overlap in the laminate and using the supplied cable tie. You can also mount the laminated sign to the supplied corrugated plastic backing board. The backing board can be hung from a sign, attached to a metal step-stake or mounted to the top of a metal frame.

3. How do I attach my sign to the top of a metal frame?
You can mount two 3 inch, no. 8 screws from the underside of the frame and then slide the flutes of the corrugated sign onto the screws for a very secure mounting or you can purchase clips from many different sign companies.

4. How many hole reinforcers do I need per sign?
We recommend using hole reinforcers on both sides of your sign, 4 per sign.

5. What happens if I pierce the printed sign?
Whenever you pierce a MyCustomSigns, make sure it is in the laminate overlap area and not anywhere on the cardstock. This will prevent possible water intrusion.

6. Can I reuse the corrugated plastic backing boards?
The adhesive used on the corrugated plastic backing boards is a permanent and is designed for one use. If you remove a laminated sign and apply another one to the corrugated plastic backing board, we will not guarantee success.

7. Do I need a "carrier" for the laminate pouches?
Most laminator manufacturers recommend a "carrier" to prevent thin papers from being wrapped around the rollers. Our laminate is thicker (3 mil) and our cardstock is heavier (80# cover), thereby eliminating that possible problem. However, we do recommend using a single sheet of regular copy paper folded to 8 1/2 x 5 1/2 and placed over the leading or sealed edge of the laminating pouch prior to inserting into the laminator to prevent the rare possibility of a corner "kinking". If "kinking" does occur you can smooth it by simply re-running the laminated piece through the laminator.

8. Will my sign fade?
We recommend OEM inks, which, along with the UV characteristics of the laminating pouches, are very resistant to fading. Off brand inks may fade very rapidly.

9. How will my sign hold up in windy conditions?
MyCustomSigns signs will withstand windy conditions just as would any other sign.

10. Can I print the the supplied cardstock on both sides?
Yes, but we recommend printing 2 banners and inserting them into the laminating pouch back to back. This increases both opacity and rigidity.

11. What do I do when I run out of supplies?
Re-orders and refills are available on this site or you can call sales at 800 215 1974. Order.
